The first Beyond Academia conference was held in March 2013. It focused primarily on the fields of Psychology, Neuroscience, Vision Science, and Education; the conference sold out at over 200 attendees and 40 speakers, and received nationwide media coverage. The high speaker/attendee ratio allowed for frank discussions and ensured that attendees could easily interact with the speakers.

Beyond Academia 2017 will take place on March 2nd and 3rd, 2017 – it aims to repeat the success of the last conference and bring it to an even wider audience: the conference will now be a two day event, and will include speakers from a broader variety of backgrounds. It is our mission to provide an experience that strongly prepares PhDs with relevant options and concrete examples for a career beyond academia in the sector that fits each person the best. The attendees will benefit from direct access to knowledge, communication, and networking opportunities with non-academic professionals who have themselves gone through the transition, including several UC Berkeley alumni.

Who should attend?

If you are considering a career outside of academia, wondering whether or where to pursue a postdoc, or simply interested in hearing about many career options available to PhDs, we encourage you to attend the conference.

Through Beyond Academia you will have a unique opportunity – direct exposure to a diverse representation of non-academic careers, presented by individuals (including UC Berkeley alumni) who have successfully made the transition after receiving a PhD.

We look forward to seeing you soon at Beyond Academia!

Why Beyond Academia?

The National Science Foundation reports that about only about 20% of PhDs will successfully attain a tenure-track academic position within 4-6 years of their graduation. The vast majority of PhDs seek careers outside of academia, yet few universities seem to offer career training programs that educate PhD students and postdocs on the opportunities available outside academia.

What is Beyond Academia?

Beyond Academia is a career education conference that exposes UC Berkeley PhD students and postdocs to career options outside of academia. Panels on a variety of career tracks give attendees the opportunity to interact with successful and creative professionals, while workshops and networking events allow for discussion in an informal setting.

Speakers

Alexandra ZafirogluAlexandra Zafiroglu – Thursday’s Keynote Speaker
Principal Engineer, Internet of Things Business Group
PhD in Cultural Anthropology

Alex Zafiroglu is a Principal Engineer in the Internet of Things Business Group at Intel Corporation. Her research directs innovation and strategic decisions for multiple teams across Intel working on platforms and technologies related to domestic computing, by understanding user contexts, practices, values, desires and needs. Alex defines transformational experiences in domestic spaces including homes and private passenger cars, and across device categories from desktop computers to gateways to set top boxes and Internet of Things platforms and devices. She’s roadtripped in an RV for a week to understand the challenges of mobile domesticity, lugged around a shower curtain and stepstool to unpack the contents of cars from Wuhan to Sao Paulo to Frankfurt to Penang, watched people watch TV in 15 countries, and explored laundry rooms in Swedish apartment buildings and Indonesian student housing. She excels at making sense of the mundane, everyday rhythms of domestic life, and identifying areas for innovation in nascent markets. She completed a Ph.D. and M.A. in Cultural Anthropology at Brown University, and a BA in Anthropology & History at the University of Delaware.

Tanya Moore – Friday’s Keynote Speaker
Vice President of Human Ressources, Interim at Goodwill, Inc. San Francisco, San Mateo & Marin Counties
PhD in Biostatistics

Tanya Moore, PhD, a native of Berkeley, CA, is currently the Interim Vice President of Human Resources for Goodwill Industries of San Francisco, Marin and San Mateo Counties and also serves as an adjunct professor for Presidio Graduate School. She received her doctoral training in the field of Biostatistics at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to attending UC Berkeley, Dr. Moore obtained a BS degree in Mathematics from Spelman College and a Masters in Science and Engineering from the Mathematical Sciences Department at The Johns Hopkins University. After completing a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Biostatistics at UCLA, she returned to her hometown where she worked in local government on multi-agency initiatives focused on health and educational inequities in the city of Berkeley. In this role, she provided technical assistance, support and guidance to practitioners in areas such as program design, evaluation, strategic planning, navigating public organizations, and methods for implementing a plan that begins with a simple idea. Tanya is one of the creators of the Infinite Possibilities Conference, a conference designed to support, empower and promote underrepresented minority women mathematicians. The conference has been held at Spelman College, North Carolina State University, UCLA, University of Maryland, Baltimore County and Oregon State University. Dr. Moore is also one of the authors of Finding Your North: Self-Help Strategies for Science Related Careers, and is a Board member for the organization Building Diversity in Science (diversityinscience.org). She has been featured in Black Enterprise and O, The Oprah Magazine. She was recognized as one of the “STEM Woman of the Year” by California State Assembly Member Nancy Skinner in April 2014.
