Assessing human cognitive state in real-world environments - Real 2021
19 - 21 January, 2021 - Funchal, Madeira, Portugal
Within the 11th International Conference on Bio-inspired Systems and Signal Processing - BIOSIGNALS 2021
SCOPE
It is relatively simple to assess human cognitive states such as workload, vigilance, and situational awareness using behavioral, physiological, and neurophysiological measures (e.g., functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), eye tracking, electroencephalography (EEG)) when individuals are seated. As sensors become more ubiquitous, people are attempting to use them outside the lab during typical activities (e.g., during high fidelity training, in the cockpit in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) ground control stations). However, methods to assess cognitive workload during normal activities are only recently emerging (Izzetoglu et al., 2011, McKendrick et al., 2021, Bracken et al., 2021). During this special session, we will present several projects aimed at adapting laboratory-based methods to assess human states of interest while people go about typical daily activities.
TOPICS:
• Using functional near infrared spectroscopy to assess cognitive performance of UAV sensor operators;
• Using functional near-infrared spectroscopy for evaluation of mental workload and training;
• Measuring immersion in experiences with biosensors.

CHAIR
Bethany BrackenCharles River Analytics Inc.

Brief Bio
Dr. Bethany Bracken, is a Senior Scientist at Charles River Analytics. Throughout her career, Dr. Bracken has used a variety of behavioral, physiological, cognitive, molecular, and neuroimaging methodologies in both humans and animals to answer questions about the neurobiology of behavior. At Charles River, she currently works on projects using neurophysiological and physiological sensing methods to assess human states such as stress, focused attention, and cognitive workload and to predict upcoming performance deficits to allow time to enact augmentation strategies to optimize that performance. Dr. Bracken has a B.S. in Psychology from Clarion University of Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Brandeis University. Before joining Charles River Analytics, Dr. Bracken completed a postdoctoral fellowship, quickly followed with a promotion to the faculty level, in the department of Psychiatry at McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
SCOPE
The purpose of the International Conference on Bio-inspired Systems and Signal Processing is to bring together researchers and practitioners from multiple areas of knowledge, including biology, medicine, engineering and other physical sciences, interested in studying and using models and techniques inspired from or applied to biological systems. A diversity of signal types can be found in this area, including image, audio and other biological sources of information. The analysis and use of these signals is a multidisciplinary area including signal processing, pattern recognition and computational intelligence techniques, amongst others.
BIOSIGNALS encourages authors to submit papers to one of the main topics indicated below, describing original work, including methods, techniques, advanced prototypes, applications, systems, tools or survey papers, reporting research results and/or indicating future directions. Accepted papers will be presented at the conference by one of the authors and published in the proceedings. Acceptance will be based on quality, relevance and originality. There will be both oral and poster sessions.
The proceedings will be indexed by several major international indexers.
Special sessions are also welcome. Please contact the secretariat for further information on how to propose a special session.
